LONGWOOD, Fla. - Gordon D. Hawes, 69, of Longwood, Fla., passed away on May 3, 2015. Mr. Hawes was born in Chicago. He was a Software Engineer.

Frederick E. Raffety, 78
ROCKFORD – Frederick Elon Raffety, 78, of Rockford, died Saturday, April 18, 2015 in OSF St. Anthony Hospital. Born Nov. 28, 1936 in Wayzata, MN; the son of Ernest G. and Emma J. (Short) Raffety.
He married Judith Hasbrouck on Aug. 26, 1961, in Mapleton, Iowa. Fred received his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, SD, and a Juris Doctor degree from William Mitchell College of Law, St. Paul, MN.
Fred was Owner and President of Focus Financial Advisors, Rockford, Ill. He was a longtime member of Christ United Methodist Church, a member of Rockford East Rotary and a Paul Harris Fellow, on the Rockford Symphony Orchestra Board, and the Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center Board.
Frederick was a past board member of the Belvidere YMCA and Highland Hospital Board. Fred’s hobbies included traveling, trips to Chicago with his grandchildren, reading and watching sports.
Survived by his wife of 53 years, Judith; children, David (Marla) Raffety and Katherine (Kenneth) Harper; four grandchildren, EM2 Andrew Raffety, USN, Norfolk, VA, Leah Raffety, DeKalb, Ill., and Emma and Joshua Harper, Rockford; brothers, Richard (Rita) and Michael (Liliane); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his parents and an infant brother.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 24, in Christ United Methodist Church, 4509 Highcrest Road. Rockford with Pastor Scott Himel officiating. Burial in Argyle Cemetery. Visitation was on Thursday, April 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, 1001 Second Ave.

LA CROSS, Wis. - France Ann (Wallin) Artman, 99, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2014, at Bethany St. Joseph Care Center in La Crosse, Wis.
Fran was born April 26, 1915, in Rapid City, South Dakota to Andrew and Helen (Terry) Wallin.Ê Her father passed away when she was three years old but not before her little brother Richard ÒDickÓ was born. They were blessed to have a wonderful step-father, O.W. Gardner. They grew up in Freeport, Ill.
Fran met the love of her life, Ray Artman, at a ValentineÕs dance in high school when they were 16.Ê She graduated from high school two years later.
They were married on May 14, 1937, at Grace Episcopal Church in Freeport. They were married for 40 years until RayÕs death in 1977. They had one son, James Douglas.
Fran loved hats and was the manager of the Millinery Dept. at GrahamÕs Dress Shop, WeiseÕs, and D.J. Stewarts in Rockford.
She was very active in her community and church. Fran was a Girl Scout leader for over 40 years. She was the president of the Belvidere Business and Professional WomenÕs Club, the WomanÕs Club, and the Boone County Garden Club. Gardening was one of her hobbies andÊgave her many years of joy. She had beautiful flower gardens at her home. Fran was a Sunday School teacher, and was on the church altar guild for over 50 years.
She did a lot of fund raising for Holy Trinity Episcopal ChurchÕs organ fund in Belvidere, having many Christmas tree walks and was also a trustee for that fund. Fran loved poetry and especially writing poetry and was published later in life.
Frances is survived by her son, James; granddaughters, Rae Ann (Scott) Elvin and Janice Hermes; great-grandchildren, Jackie Hermes (Derek) Steinmetz, James Hermes, Adam Elvin, Alex Elvin; and great-great grandson, Arrington Steinmetz.
She was preceded in death by her husband; mother; father; step-father; and brother.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 27, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Belvidere. Internment will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service.Ê

Duane Carl Mosure, 75
Duane Carl Mosure, 75, was born on Aug. 10, 1939, in Lockport, New York, to William C. and Augusta (Dolly) Marie Mosure and died Jan. 31, 2015, in Round Rock, Texas, with his daughter Melissa Reeve by his side, following years of declining health. He is preceded in death by his parents. Duane leaves behind his beloved wife of 52 years, Mary Rita (Mooney) Mosure and their four daughters: Amy (Thomas) Numrych of Woodinville, WA; Melissa (Ian) Reeve of Round Rock, TX; Jennifer (Steve) Core of Highlands Ranch, CO; and Rebecca (Terry) Kawahara of Maple Valley, WA, as well as, four grandchildren whom he loved very much: Sarah Reeve, Jeffrey Numrych, Andrew Kawahara and Austin Kawahara. Additionally, he leaves behind his sister, Joyce (Peter) Tarajos of Gasport, NY; brother-in-law, Patrick (Margaret) Mooney of Columbus, OH; cousin, Jim Wagner, of Akron, NY, whom was like his brother, and numerous extended family members and friends. In his youth, he enjoyed summer days on his Uncle Henry and Aunt Mildred Wagner’s farm. He was a member of the swim and dive team at Lockport High School earning awards for his achievements. Duane graduated from Lockport High School and continued his education at Clarkson College of Technology, Potsdam, NY, earning a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He enjoyed unwinding games of hockey with classmates between studies. Duane went on to attend the University of Dayton, Dayton, OH, earning a Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering. He began his career in engineering with the Aeronautical Systems Division at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, OH. While in Dayton he married his wife and they began a family. They relocated to Torrington, CT, where Duane continued his career as an aeronautical engineer at Candler Evans, Hartford, CT. In 1977 Duane secured employment with Sundstrand Corporation, Rockford and worked there until his retirement in 1999. He had a brilliant mind and excelled in his field earning numerous United States patents, such as Centrifugal Pump Diffuser Ring Assembly and Mechanical Shaft Seal. He valued education and saw that his children graduated from college. Mr. Mosure and his wife spent their retirement traveling visiting friends, family and enjoying their grandchildren. He was a member of the Coon Creek Casters, a Boone County fishing club, which brought him enjoyment. Additionally, he enjoyed woodworking, hobby farming, vegetable gardening, county fairs and air shows. Duane will be missed and not forgotten by those who knew and loved him. A memorial service will be held on Mar. 15 at Light of Life Lutheran Church, Covington, WA, and Duane and his wife will eventually be interred at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Somerset, Ohio, where they promised to love each other forever and began their lives together. Shirley Ann Cohen, 95
Shirley Ann Cohen(nee Silver) of St. Charles, Illinois, died on Jan. 21, 2015 at the age of 95. She was born May 8, 1919.
Shirley was born on May 8, 1919, in Belvidere, Illinois. She married the love of her life Marvin Cohen, of Elgin, Ill. on June 15, 1943. Marvin truly cherished her. After 53 wonderful years of marriage, her beloved Marvin, passed away in 1996.
Shirley was the dear daughter of the late Dorothy and Louis Silver of Belvidere the founders of Louis Silver Scrap-Iron Metal. She is survived by her daughter Linda Cohen of St. Charles, and by two brothers, Allen Silver and Morton (Elaine) Silver of Belvidere.
Shirley, a loving homemaker, was known for her baking skills. Her immaculate kosher home was often filled with the aroma of her ‘one-in-a-million’ banana cake and scrumptious brownies. In addition to baking, she also enjoyed cooking, reading biographies, knitting, needlepoint, gardening, and aquatic classes at Delnor Health and Fitness Center. She was alert, healthy, trim, always impeccably dressed and a very generous person who would never divulge her age.
Shirley was a lifetime member of Hadassah, a member of the Fox Valley Order of Eastern Star Chapter #265, (she was Esther), and a former pink- lady volunteer at Delnor Hospital. She thoroughly enjoyed living in St. Charles.
Funeral services were held at Shalom Memorial Park 1700 West Rand Road in Arlington Heights, Illinois at 1 p.m. Jan. 22. Dale L. Parks, 84
Dale L. Parks, 84, of Roscoe, and formerly of Belvidere, died on Monday, Jan. 12, 2015. Born on Aug. 19, 1930 to Harmon and Lillian Parks in Effingham, Ill. Dale was employed at Sanitary Scale Co. and then retired from Barber Colman Co. He was a member of Belvidere Masonic Lodge No. 60. He loved to play Pinochle and Fishing. He had a fish fry at his home every year. He came from a loving family and will be missed very much. He was married to Mary Rucker and they had six children together; she died in 2003.
Survivors are daughters, Karen Magin, Rita (Roger) Gerloff, Debbie (Al) Garcia, Mary Dale Parks; son, Lonnie (Linda) Parks; sister, Louise Stepp of Machesney Park; 9 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents; son, Dale Leon; sisters, Ann Ealy, Ethel Rickman, Helen Smith, Lenora Jones, Belva Tinker, Lois Roloft, Lillian Steele; brother, John Parks; and special friend, Doris Lee. Helen Louise Cleland, 84
Helen Louise Cleland, 84, of Capron passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning, Jan. 13, 2015 in Northwoods Care Centre after a lingering illness. Louise was born Mar. 30, 1930 in Chicago, Ill. the daughter of Roy W. and Clare L. (Fossler) Davis. Shortly after her birth the family moved to Polo, Ill. where she graduated from high school and was active in 4-H. Louise went on to earn her teaching degree from Northern Illinois University in 1952. She taught for a year at North Boone High School prior to marrying William E. Cleland on Jul. 11, 1953 in Polo. Louise was a writer, who wrote for the Belvidere Daily Republican in the paper’s food section as well as her own column, “Wife on the Farm.” She also wrote two books, “Wife on the Farm and Wife on the Farm Cookbook”. She was a life-long member of Capron United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Education was an important part of Louise’s life; she was a room-mother for all her children, member of the PTA as well as serving as an officer, worked with young mothers at risk assisting with education and job skills and taught craft classes at Rock Valley College for the college’s adult education curriculum. She was a talented crafter and seamstress and a marvelous quilter. She was a member of the Harvard Quilting Guild and demonstrated quilting at the Pioneer Festival. She was also a critic for the Quilters Quarterly magazine. Louise and Bill enjoyed traveling internationally and domestically. Louise will also be remembered as a wonderful cook, loving wife and doting mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Louise is loved and will be missed by her children, Jerry (Janell) of Highwood, Ill., John (Diane) of Capron, Bruce of Tempe, Ariz., Michael (Vicki) of Roscoe, Barbara (Chuck) Massier of Sycamore, Steve of Rockford Ill.; grandchildren, Justin (Erika), Scott, Daria, Taylor, Jared, Mikaela, Alicia, Danielle, Erika, Damon, Derek; great-granddaughter, Camryn; sister, Jane (Ted) Benson of Cable, Wis.; sister in-law, Betty Belle (Len) Cherry, Palo Alto, Calif.; nieces and nephews. Barney Ray Roberts, age 76, passed away on Friday Jan. 9, 2015 at his home with his family at his side. He was born on Dec. 28, 1938 in Chicago, IL, the son of Clare William and Nellie Lenore Miller Roberts. He married Jo Ellen Marie Hintzsche on May 11, 1996 in Rochelle. Barney was an industrial manager for Country Gas in Crystal Lake, Ill. Barney was an avid Packers Fan. He also loved to fish, play lottery tickets, and watch western movies. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy. Barney is preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters: Marion Roberto and Betty VanWinkle, and 2 brothers: Pete and Mike Roberts.
Survived by his wife, Jo Ellen Roberts of Belvidere; his son, Michael Roberts of Byron, 2 daughters: Anna (Kevin) Casey of Chandler, AZ, Tricia (Don) Certain of Cottonwood, AZ; brother, Daniel Roberts of Belvidere, sister, Sue Smith of Belvidere, nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren, mother-in-law, Evelyn Hintzsche, brother-in-law, John (Lauren) Hintzsche of Lindenwood, and several nieces and nephews.

Dr. Larry Gray McLain, 75 1939-2015
Dr. Larry Gray McLain of Chicago, age 75, passed away peacefully with his wife Kathryn by his side on Saturday, Jan. 3. An avid runner, cyclist, triathlete, and ever-optimistic Cubs fan, Larry was born on Mar. 20, 1939 in Belvidere, and was the son of Charles & Margaret (Gray) McLain. He graduated from Belvidere High School and attended Lake Forest College and University of Illinois Medical School. As a pediatrician, teacher and hospital administrator, Larry dedicated his career to healing children. For nearly fifty years, Larry was the beloved husband to Kathryn Keaton McLain, and is survived by his three children, Kristeen, Erin and Matthew, and his six grandchildren, Hazel, Myles, Elsie, Franklin, Bianca and Valentina. A burial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015 at 11a.m. at the Belvidere Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Larry’s name to Lurie Children’s Hospital.

BELVIDERE - John (Jack) E Reynolds – 68 of Belvidere passed away on Nov. 26, 2014 at Alden Debes Nursing Home with his daughter by his side. John was born Nov. 24, 1946 to John and Gladys (Morris) Reynolds in Belvidere. He lived many places throughout Illinois and Wisconsin but he always called Belvidere home.
John was an avid sportsman, who loved to fish and camp with his family leaving his children with wonderful experiences and lasting memories. He also loved to cook and he was a fabulous story teller. Nothing made him happier sitting beside a camp fire telling stories and laughing with his loved ones. He was a valued friend and will be missed greatly.
Survived by son, John Reynolds (Pueblo, CO), daughter, Jessica (Matthew) Fleming (Stevens Point, WI), Step-children Anthony McDowell (Oregon, WI) and Katrina (Bill) Zentefis (Cary, IL) as well as his grandchildren: Ariel, Marco, Ben, Jacob, Athena and Josh; his sisters Kathy (Jerry) Cole, Laurellee Anson, brother Daniel Reynolds as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Artis M. Curtis, age 87, of Frederic, WI, formerly of Rice Lake, WI died Friday, October 17, 2014 at the St. Croix Regional Medical Center in St. Croix Falls, WI.
She was born on May 14, 1927 in Viroqua, WI to Lester and Alice (Martin) Chambers. After graduating from the Belvidere High School in 1945 in Belvidere, IL she attended the Columbia University of Cosmetology in Rockford, IL. On August 6, 1949 she was married to Robert Curtis in Belvidere and shortly there after they moved to Rice Lake where she was a homemaker and raised 3 daughters. She loved nature, animals, was an excellent cook and baker. She also loved watching sports, following politics, national news and world events.
Artis Curtis is survived by 3 daughters and sons-in-law, Linda & Dennis O’Donnell of Frederic, WI, Kris Curtis & Scott Larson of Stone Lake, WI and Lisa & Joe Lopez of Black Hawk, CO; a grandson, Ellis Lopez; a sister, Caryl Pettey of Belvidere, IL; 2 brothers, Everett Chambers of Strasburg, CO and Howard Chambers of Belvidere, IL; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Alice; 2 sisters, Ida and Jane and a brother, Dale.

Carl F. Howard Sr,. age 80, of Medford, died peacefully Friday morning Sept. 12 at the Golden Living Center-Continental Manor Nursing Home in Abbotsford. Wis., surrounded by his family and under the tender care of Aseracare Hospice.
Carl was born Mar. 3, 1934 in Charlotte, North Carolina the son Simon and Sarah (Overcash) Howard. He attended schools in Charlotte, NC and graduated from high school there. After high school Carl enlisted in the US Army and was honorably discharged in Apr. 1963.
Carl married the former Catherine Cronick on September 5, 1962 and she passed away on January 3, 1973.
On Apr. 4 in Capron, Carl was united in marriage to Henrietta Wiedrich.
Carl worked for the Chrysler Corporation as an auto assembler in Belvidere for over 31years.
Carl is lovingly survived by his wife; Henrietta Pester-Howard of Medford, son; Carl (Margaret) Howard Jr. of Machesney Park, IL, grandson; Nicholas Scott Howard of Machesney Park, IL, stepchildren; Christine Pester, Robert Pester Jr., Harold Pester, Tammy Pester-Peterson, Esther Truckey and Timothy Pester,22 step-grandchildren, 26 step-great-grandchildren and numerous surviving nieces, nephews and relatives in North Carolina. Carl was also a proud and longtime friend of Bill W.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; Catherine, step-daughter; Linda Hoyt, brothers; Edison Howard Sr., Charles Howard and Scott Howard and sisters; Juanita Howard-Helms, Lillian Howard and Frances Howard-Shumate.

Leo N. Wykle, age 87 of Belvidere, IL, passed away Saturday, September 13, 2014 at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, IL after a brief illness. He was born July 28, 1927 in Kewanee, IL. The son of Michael and Anna (Dromovich) Wykle. He married Shirley Builte on June 25, 1955 in Belvidere, IL. Leo served with the Navy in WWII. He was a Belvidere resident since 1952. He worked as an in industrial spray painter for Rockford Products in Rockford, IL, Retiring in 1997. Leo loved to travel, bowling, watching his St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Bears, and fishing in Hayward, WI, spending time with family and friends, and visiting Grand Victoria in Elgin, IL. He is survived by his wife, Shirley A. Wykle of Belvidere, IL, daughter, Deborah (Robert) Mitchel of Machesney Park, IL, Son Daniel R. Wykle of Glendale, AZ, grandchildren, Alexandra and Amanda Wykle of Surprise, AZ, and Nicholas J. Mitchel of Machesney Park, IL. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, George, Nicholas, Peter John, Steven and Thomas, sisters, Alma, Mary and Tonica. Stephen D. Southard, 68, of Poplar Grove, Illinois died peacefully on Thursday, September 4, 2014 in his home following a long illness. He was born on July 19, 2014 in Vincennes, Indiana; the son of Charles and Delores (Barnett) Southard. Steve worked as a repairman for the Chrysler Corporation. He enjoyed listening to Bluegrass Music as well as an accomplished musician with stringed instruments. Luella Broaddus Dennis
Luella Broaddus Dennis of Fairfield Glade, TN left her body at 11:50 PM on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2014.
Born in Streator, IL, Luella was the daughter of Louis Reuben Broaddus and Helen Woods Jackson. She had an older sister, Nancy Ruth Broaddus Carson as well as younger brother named Lawrence William Broaddus who lives in Sycamore, IL.
She met her husband of 56 years, Richard Earl Dennis, in Winterhaven, FL in 1953. Rick and Luella were married five years later and had two children. Their son, Phillip Louis Dennis, with wife Melanie Maningding Dennis reside in Alexandria, VA and their daughter, Rebecca Ann Dennis and grandson, Samuel Louis Dennis reside in Escondido, CA.
Luella worked in public education at the Jr. High School in Belvidere, IL for 22 years serving as the School Librarian and English teacher. She was honored with the District-Wide Education Award in 1997.
Rick and Luella relocated to Fairfield Glade in 1998. Luella was an active member in the Cumberland County Community Band. Having played flute for over 45 years she performed as a soloist with various ensembles which included the Fairfield Glade Community Church, Cumberland County Chorus, UCC Church of Pleasant Hill as well as various nursing homes including the Fletcher House of Pleasant Hill. In her last few years of service with the Cumberland County Community Band she performed as a percussionist and bell player.
Luella was a member of the Fairfield Glade Community Church where she played in the bell choir and served as the church librarian for over 5 years,
Luella Dennis donated her body for scientific research to the MERI Education and Research Institute in Memphis, TN. A memorial service will be planned in early November, 2014.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to Hospice of Cumberland County or the Cumberland County Community Band.

David W. Schmidt, 92, of Poplar Grove, passed Monday, September 8, 2014 in his daughter’s home. He was born March 4, 1922 in Rockford, IL; the son of Herman and Louise Schmidt. David married Audrey Chamberlain in Belvidere on May 31, 1947. He was a Precision Tool and Die Maker for Barber Colman Co. David was a veteran of WWII serving in the Marines. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in which he was a church elder for many years. He received his GED while returning home from service in the Pacific Theatre. David is survived by his daughter, Nancy Schmidt; son, David (Kris) Schmidt; 3 grandchildren, Derek (Jamie) Holtz; Terra (Troi) Knott and Nathan Schmidt; 4 great grandchildren, Jillian Taylor, Aaron Taylor; Keeghan Holtz, Bethany Dobbratz; sister, Gloria (Ernie) Mowers, brother, Ron (Bernie) Schmidt; many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents, wife, Audrey, granddaughter, Jonette Taylor; brother, Maynard Schmidt.

Marie Louise Biggins, 88
Marie Louise Biggins, age 88, of Neillsville, WI died Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at the Clark County Health Care Center in Owen, WI.
Marie Louise Christensen was born on April 24, 1926 in Newburgh, NY the daughter of Alfred and Edith (Anderson) Christensen. She graduated from high school in Mayville, NY in 1944 and then worked as a waitress. Later, she moved to Minnesota and was united in marriage to Blanchford B. Biggins in Minneapolis, MN on November 10, 1947. They lived in Rockford, IL and then Caledonia, IL for 29 years before retiring and moving to Shell Lake, WI, where they lived for 25 years. After her husband’s death, she moved to Neillsville and in January, 2013 she moved to the Clark County Health Care Center.
Marie was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Neillsville. She loved to dance especially polkas, do needle point and go fishing. She was known as the entertainer of her family and did a great job getting everyone together for family reunions.
She is survived by a daughter, Belinda (Dennis) of Orion, IL, a daughter-in-law, Connie (Scott) Johnson of Belvidere, IL, three grandchildren, Brandy Biggins of Belvidere, IL, Bridget Paul of Roscoe, IL and Becky Counsell of Belvidere, IL, a great grandson, Trevor Paul of Roscoe, IL and three siblings, Eleanor Wickland of Abbotsford, WI, Ed Christensen of Neillsville, WI and Ellen (Jack) Moffatt of Almongordo, NM.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sons, Brad and Brian, a grandson, Benjamin Johnson and a brother, Carl Christensen.

Carol Mae LaBuy Barney, 76
Carol Mae LaBuy Barney, age 76, of Cherry Hill, died Saturday, June 28 at the Rich Mountain Nursing and Rehab. She was born Thursday, December 23, 1937 to Frank J. and Josephine Novak LaBuy in Chicago, Illinois.
Carol always thought a thing of beauty is a joy forever which encompassed her thoughts of her family. She and her husband, Stephen, raised their children in a Christian home and she loved them with all her heart. She was very proud of each and every one of them. Carol attended Cherry Hill Baptist Church and taught Sunday school for many years there. She enjoyed decorating her home, sewing, needlework, playing the organ, gardening and ceramics. Carol was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt and friend and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Stephen Douglas Barney and one brother, Larry LaBuy.
Survivors include two sons and daughters in laws, Daniel Lee and Jody Barney of Huntsville, Alabama and Stephen Andrew and Joy Barney of Cherry Hill; two daughters, Sandra L. Ward of Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin and Jill Annette Cabello and husband Juan of Cherry Hill; twelve grandchildren, Nathaniel Barney of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Allison Barney of Nashville, Tennessee, Adam Barney of Huntsville, Alabama, Jonathan Ward of Janesville, Wisconsin, Timothy Ward of Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin, Misti Clark of Frisco, Texas, Phillip Savage of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Christopher Grimes of Rantoul, Illinois, Jordan Barney, Bethany Barney, Eden Barney and Keilah Barney all of Cherry Hill; six great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Andrew Usowicz, 84
Andrew Usowicz passed away peacefully on June 9, 2014. Born in Poland in 1930, Andy barely survived World War II. After the war, Andy immigrated to the United States via England and worked as an electronics technician in Chicago until retirement. His spare time was devoted to evening Judo and swimming instruction at Wright College. He has been a resident of Maple Crest Care Center in Belvidere for many years. Nelson, Esther E.
Esther E. Nelson, 83, of Belvidere, died peacefully, Thursday evening, May 22, 2014 in OSF St. Anthony Medical Center after a sudden illness, surrounded by her loving family. Esther was born June 18, 1930 in Oxford, Wisconsin the daughter of William N. and Lillian Alma Amonda (Kanzenbach) Barton. She married Donald E. Nelson on March 12, 1949 in Lake Delton, WI. Over the years, Esther worked for Bottle Cap, Warner Electric and more recently as a teacher for the Open Bible Academy. Esther was a former Sunday School Superintendent for Open Bible Church; she enjoyed camping with her family every summer and loved her family deeply; her great-granddaughter Skye was her newest apple of her eye. Esther was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Belvidere, where she made her spiritual home.
Esther was always there for family and anyone who needed her. She took great pride in community, family and manners and was an excellent wife, mother and grandmother. Esther was known for her coordinated outfits and jewelry. Esther and Don were married for 63 years. Although she mourned him every day following his death, she tried to put on a good front despite her grief.
Esther is loved and will be missed by her daughters, Debra (Bill) Werner of Rockford, Carol (Dean) Chambers of Belvidere; grandchildren, Branson Werner of Rockford, Renee (Shane Lunde) Werner of Machesney Park, IL, Heath (Emily) Chambers of Garden Prairie, IL, Brock (Kelcy Wadley) Chambers of Belvidere; great-granddaughter Skye Chambers; sisters, Lilias Drobnik of Rockford, May C. Malisch of Belvidere and Illa Kanzenbach of Belvidere; nieces and nephews. Esther is preceded in death by her parents, husband- Donald; sisters- Hazel, Dorothy, Lillian and LaVila; brothers- Fred, Charles, George, Merlin and Glen.

Lorene B. Farel, 89, of Belvidere, IL died peacefully, Monday, May 26, 2014 in her home surrounded by her loving family. Lorene was born June 15, 1924 in Vidette, Arkansas the daughter of Oscar and Josie (Bryant) Foster. Lorene married Daniel R.”Ross” Farel in Bakersfield, Missouri on November 28, 1938. She retired from Arnold Engineering where she worked for 30 years. Lorene was a member of Belvidere First Assembly of God Church and enjoyed quilting and being with her quilting friends.

Dan A. Mallett, 87
Dan A. Mallett of Kimberling City, MO died Saturday morning, May 17, 2014. Dan was the son of Gertrude Spencer Mallett Suhr and Walter Daniel Mallett, Born August 6, 1926. He attended Belvidere, IL schools and was a World War II veteran. He served in the US Navy and was awarded the Pacific Theater and Philippine Liberation ribbons. He was a sheet metal tech and a heating man owning his own business in Rockford, IL for 15 years. He was also president of Boone County Conservation Council in IL, Scoutmaster for Zion Lutheran Church and Gun Safety Instructor for the YMCA in Belvidere, IL.
Dan was predeceased by his parents, his son, Dan H Mallett.
He is survived by his wife, Marian (Ward) whom he married in 1948, in Belvidere IL, 2 daughters, Sandra Gray of Kimberling City MO, Pam Blake(Gary) of Crane MO; 8 Grandchildren, Bridget Reynolds, Dawn Gray, Kelly Hall, Kim Michel, Dawn Howard, Denise Fischer, Diana McDaniels, and Brian Blake. Also survived by 16 great grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren.
He will be missed.

Irene Marie Knapp, 95, of Belvidere, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 27, 2014 in Bloomington, Illinois with her loving family at her side.
She was born June 30, 1918 to John and Edith Blietz in Belvidere, Illinois.
Irene is survived by three children, Winfred Knapp (Valmere), Glenda Blume (late Jim), and James Knapp (Marion). She had 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 3 great, great grandchildren, and 3 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Glenn “Doc” Knapp, sisters Edith Schiltz (late Walter) and Florence Fane (late Daniel), brother John Blietz (late Marjorie), and grandson John Kenneth Knapp.

Bettie Jean Raddatz, 88, of Rockford passed away peacefully April 24, 2014 in the home of her daughter, Barbara, surrounded by her loving family.
Born October 6, 1925 to Harold and Martha (Johaningsmier) Cordray in Belvidere. Married Clarence W. Raddatz on July 13, 1944.
Bettie was an extremely talented china painter and leaves many beautiful pieces for her family to treasure.
Bettie is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Lloyd) McWilliams, Mary (Charles) Rudd; and daughter-in-law, Lorraine Raddatz; grandchildren Kimberly (Robert) Kludt, Patrick (Sheri) McWilliams, Jennifer (Brian) Bandoli, Jeffery Rudd, Angela (Michael) Parisot, Dawn Raddatz, Karyn (Michael) Young, Pamela (Darrell) Dummer; 11 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; brother, Jay (Mary) Cordray; sister, Joyce Cordray; and several nieces and nephews. ROCKFORD – Rush Robert DePoutee, age 62, of Rockford and formerly of Belvidere passed away Thursday April 17, 2014.
Born in Belvidere on August 19, 1951 to Martyn “Skid” and Pauline DePoutee (Hawkey).
A strong and faithful follower of Christ, Rush was a farmer by heart and truck driver by trade.
He loved spending time at the Boone County Fair, and very much enjoyed the company of his friends and watching the tractor pulls.
A true patriot, he served in the US Army.
He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Cynthia; children, David Stoll, Jason (Jessica) Stoll,Tina Stoll, Makayla Stoll, Willie Purnell and Amber Morgan; grandchildren, Nolan and Sadie Stoll; sister Susan (Robert) Cessaro; along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents.

Melpomene Catherine Stimes, 84
Melpomene Catherine Stimes died in Brookfield, Illinois, April 14, 2014 at age 84. She was born April 18, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois to Demetrios and Stamati, nee Exarhos, Bezanis, both first generation immigrants from Epirus, Greece. A graduate of Morton East High School and Northern Illinois University, she met her husband, Alfred C. Stimes, in Capron, Illinois, where she taught high school. They married in 1954, moved to Broadview, Illinois, and had three sons, Peter (Kathy), Jonathan, and Theodore. She survived her husband, who died in 1997.
Melpomene was active in both immediate and extended communities. Her paid occupations were librarian, teacher and substitute teacher. Her more rewarding occupations were wife, mother, homemaker, Cub Scout den mother, Sunday school teacher, band mom, deacon, weekend farmer, and community volunteer. She also spent countless hours with parents, sister, in-laws, uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, nieces, schoolmates, and neighbors, as devoted family member, mentor, support, and friend. In 1985, she found a new calling as grandmother “Yia-Yia”.
She was active in and/or supported the American Association of University Women, the Norwegian-American Genealogical Society, the American Hellenic Educational and Philanthropic Association, the Chicago Historical Society, and the Newberry Library.
A world traveler, Melpomene visited with her husband in their retirement years Norway, Greece, Great Britain, France, and Germany, among other places.
Melpomene was multilingual in English, Greek, German, and Norwegian. Her world citizenship also extended to the kitchen, where she prepared traditional and contemporary dishes from Greece, Norway, Japan, Italy, and Mexico as well as American favorites.Melpomene is survived by her older sister, Athena Poulos of Tucson, Arizona; beside her three sons: her grandchildren, Austin, Alexander, Alana, April, Eric, and David, two step grandchildren, Jonathan and Michelle, and great-grandson, Tyler.

Loving son, husband, father, grandfather
Mark Eugene Meyer, 53, a lifelong resident of Belvidere, passed away unexpectedly at his home, March 31, following his daily jog.Mark was born Feb. 8, 1961, in Belvidere, the son of Eugene Edward and Betty Jane (Meyers) Meyer.
Mark graduated from Belvidere High School, class of 1979. On March 17,1984, Mark married his high school sweetheart, and the love of his life, Lori Ann Fair, at Spring Creek Congregational Church, Rockford.
Continuing his education, Mark received an Associate's Degree in Building Construction, from Rock Valley College; his Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science/Management Information Systems from Rockford College, and his Master's Degree, cum laude, in Computer Architecture from DePaul University.
Mark's career began at Sundstrand Corp. Rockford. He was highly sought after in the workplace, working for Hyatt, Orbitz, Sears, and Prime-X Wireless in Lake Geneva, Wl.
An avid runner, Mark completed seven Marathons, including "practice runs" from Rock Cut State Park to downtown Rockford.Growing up, Mark loved the "sights and sounds" of beautiful Lake Geneva, WI.
Years later, he discovered a "runner's paradise."Mark 's passion for Mopar "Muscle Cars" began early on, from birthday cakes decorated with mini "Hot Wheels" to his first driving lesson behind the steering wheel of mom's 1971 "Plum Crazy" purple Plymouth Barracuda. Several project cars were on Mark's "To-Do" list, one of which was already on his "rotisserie" waiting for Mark to "work his magic."
Plans were already in the making for a sunny retirement in Florida, where two of Mark's cousins reside.
Surviving family members include: Mark's beloved wife of 30 years, Lori Ann; two cherished daughters, Paige Lena Meyer Zammit, Belvidere and Kirsten Nicole Meyer, Clinton, WI; his adoring grandson, Rhone Avery Mays, Belvidere, mother, Betty Jane Meyer, Loves Park; father, Eugene Edward and step-mother, Sharon K. (Paul) Meyer; mother-in-law, Margaret Peggy (Davies) Fair, FL,; brother-in-Law, David Fair, San Ramon, CA; sister-in-law, Lynne (Robert) Maurice, Caledonia; very special great-aunt and uncle, Ann and David Danielson, Rockford; two very special cousins, Julie Danielson, Marco Island, FL. and Brian Danielson, Hollywood, FL.; Special friends, Jan Ann Shugrue, Belvidere; Dick Genovese, mentor, Olympic (Luge) enthusiast, fellow Mopar Muscle Car/Auto Show enthusiast/tennis partner, Rockford;Sandy and Tom Bonacorsi, "Tom's Auto Sales," Belvidere, where Mark worked as a mechanic, and Mr. & Mrs. Royal and Helen White & Family, Caledonia, who provided Mark's childcare.
Predeceased by father-in-law, Donald G. Fair, mentor and running partner, whom Mark greatly admired; aunt and uncle, Robert and Sally (Johnson) Meyers, Poplar Grove, IL; great-aunt and Belvidere school teacher, Betty Jane (Jackson) Meyers and great-uncle, Russell Meyers, Belvidere.

Kathy L. Whitacre, 61
Kathy L. Whitacre, 61, of Belvidere IL. went to the Lord on Saturday April 5, 2014 in her home surrounded by family and friends following a courageous battle with Melanoma.
Born on March 24, 1953 in Belvidere, the daughter of Waldo and Margaret (Mulholland) Trueblood.
She graduated from Belvidere High School, class of 1971.
Kathy married David Whitacre in Belvidere at the Calvary Baptist Church, March 11, 1972. She worked as a Noon-Aid at Perry Elementary School as well as a Professional Seamstress.
Kathy attended First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed sewing, arts and crafts, boating, rummage sales, antiquing, karaoke, attending live music events, and playing the piano.
Her main passion was hosting family Christmas celebrations in her home.
Kathy was a proud mother of three boys. She is survived by her husband, David; 3 sons, Corey (Micki) Whitacre, Ryan Whitacre, Brett (Kate) Whitacre; a granddaughter, Cynthia Whitacre; 2 brothers, Timothy Trueblood, Michael (Shelly) Trueblood; 2 sisters, Dawn (Hermie) Legaspi; Wendy (Howard) Pearson; special sister, Clariene (Russell) Kindberg. She is preceded in death by grandparents, parents, brother, Patrick Trueblood and special brother, Steve Jacobson.

Charles H. Waldrop Jr., 90
Charles H. Waldrop, Jr., formerly of Belvidere, passed away of a short illness on March 23, 2014 at the age of 90.
He was born on February 11, 1924 in Atlanta, Georgia. Charles was the oldest child of Charles H. Waldrop, Sr. and Bertha (Plummber) Waldrop.
Charles was married to Mary Carol Thompson in 1949 in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. Charles moved to Belvidere in 1957 when he began working as a supervisor for the Canning Factory, now known as Pillsbury.
In 1963 he purchased the Standard Oil service station at Appleton and State Street and remained the owner/operator until 1974 when he and his wife, Mary, moved to Cassville, MO where they owned and operated a small hotel. Charles remained in Cassville until his wife passed away in 1986.
Charles married Shirley Conklin on April 6, 1996 in Burlington, Iowa, who was at his side when he passed away.
Charles served in WWII when he enlisted at Fort McPhearson in 1943. He served at Pearl Harbor in 1945 and upon re-enlistment, was sent to Fort Sheridan near Higherwood, Illinois.
Charles is survived by his wife, Shirley; 6 children: Charlotte Jo (Gerald) Peters, Deborah S. Loos, Janet Waldrop, Diane J. (Roger) Schmeling, Joni L. (Gerald) Ragain, and Darin J. (Pam) Waldrop; his brothers Oneil (Mary) Waldrop and William Waldrop; his sisters Shirley (Walter) Freeman and Alice Walkins; 3 stepchildren: Lee (Kim) Gordon, Tina (Jason) Whitney and Glenn Gordon; 10 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
Charles is predeceased by his parents, his wife, Mary, his sister, Emily (Gene) Still, brothers Donald Waldrop, Gene Waldrop and Jerry Waldrop, and his brother-in-law, Raymond Walkins.
Service arrangements are pending for burial in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA with full military honors; Charles was very proud to have served his country in the South Pacific during WWII.

Donald Mark Hubbartt, 62
Winnebago – Donald Mark Hubbartt, 62, of Winnebago, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, in Rockford Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness. Born March 15, 1951, in Rockford, the son of Donald S. and Mary Jo (Ware) Hubbartt. Graduated from Winnebago High School in 1969, attended Rock Valley College and then served in the National Guard. Upon graduating from high school, Mark worked at Dubuque Meats, and then became an independent meat wholesaler, operating Hub’s Meats. He also obtained his real estate brokerage license, and enjoyed dabbling in the real estate market. Mark served on the Village of Winnebago board and remained active with the community’s issues and concerns. He always enjoyed visiting with his friends and will be dearly missed.
Mark is lovingly survived by his mother, Mary Jo Hubbartt of Winnebago; brother, Michael Bruce (Ginny) Hubbartt of Ashmore; sister, Barbara Hubbartt of Winnebago; nieces, Suzanna and Rachel Hubbartt of Charleston; uncle, Charles E. Ware of Panama City, Fla; aunt, Esther Bast of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; and numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Don, on Oct. 7, 2000.
Service is at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 16, in Genandt Funeral Home, 602 N. Elida St., Winnebago, with the Rev. Steve Shullanberger, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Winnebago, officiating. Burial in Winnebago Cemetery. Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 15, in the funeral home.
